Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Invest In 2019

For nearly eight decades, Social Security has been a financial rock for our nation’s retired workforce. Today, according to an analysis conducted by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, more than a third of all beneficiaries (including survivors of deceased workers and the long-term disabled) are lifted out of poverty solely as a result of their guaranteed monthly payouts.

However, it’s also a program that beneficiaries tend to lean on much more than they should. At last check, the Social Security Administration (SSA) found that 62% of retired workers were deriving at least half of their monthly income from Social Security, with 34% netting 90% to 100% of their income from the program.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

While Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) has been backing off its unbundling strategy, that practice seems alive and well at its subsidiary Instagram. For example, the popular photo- and video-sharing service launched a stand-alone app for IGTV, the new long-form video part of the service that was introduced over the summer. Instagram also recently launched Direct, a separate messaging app. Meanwhile, Instagram has been slowly putting together the necessary pieces of an e-commerce platform, including partnerships with third-party e-commerce platforms, testing ways for users to buy items they might see in a post, and allowing users to shop in Instagram Stories.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said on Thursday the company is applying its “diverse slate approach” to new board appointments.

The company’s “diverse slate approach” is a sort of “Rooney Rule,” the National Football League policy that requires teams to consider minority candidates for coaching and operations-level roles.

Facebook (FB) already applies the approach to its workforce. The company presents its hiring managers with at least one qualified candidate who is a member of an underrepresented group to fill an open role.

Sandberg made the announcement during the company’s annual shareholder’s meeting, adding that she “wanted to make that commitment publicly.” Her announcement was met with some applause.

Sandberg’s statements came in response to remarks from civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson, who for years has put pressure on Facebook and other tech companies to diversify boards.

In January, Facebook hired its first black board member, former American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault. The company has two female board members, Sandberg and Susan Desmond-Hellmann, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Once again, technology stocks helped to support the rest of the market, and the Nasdaq Composite outperformed most other stock indexes. Shares of Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN) rallied more than 20% over the past month as investors seemingly warmed up to the beaten-down fiber optic systems maker. Yet the rally wasn’t sparked by any positive news, so it might just be a “dead cat bounce” for a stock that remains 60% below its 52-week high. Let’s dig deeper to see if this rally has any staying power.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Monday was generally a good day for the stock market, although major benchmarks showed a considerable amount of variation in how they performed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 seemed to benefit the most from news that the U.S., Mexico, and Canada had resolved their trade differences and come to a trilateral agreement, but the Nasdaq Composite lagged, and small-cap stocks posted substantial declines. Also hurting the overall market were some disturbing developments regarding some key companies. Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN), Akorn (NASDAQ:AKRX), and Cal-Maine Foods (NASDAQ:CALM) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Top 10 Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now: Facebook, Inc.(FB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Alphabet’s Google search engine is the digital world’s most lucrative advertising business, and it was slapped with a $57 million fine last month by French authorities. And just last week, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) revoked Google’s and Facebook Inc.’s (NASDAQ: FB) enterprise developer certificates because both firms were misusing the program to collect private data from users.

Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, the twins behind the Gemini cryptocurrency platform and of Facebook (FB) fame, have won a patent claim that aims to settle exchange traded products (ETPs) that hold cryptocurrency. The Winklevoss’ patent, awarded to their Winklevoss IP fund, outlines a system that can execute transactions for ETPs holding cryptocurrencies from high-market-value bitcoin to lesser known assets like dogecoin. It’s the latest step in the Winklevoss’ goal to gain approval for cryptocurrency ETFs to trade on larger-scale markets.

There’s Facebook Inc. (FB) , which is still attempting to weather the Cambridge Analytica scandal. In the wake of the data breach, shares fell sharply. But soon after, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified on Capitol Hill, the stock rallied considerably. What’s the best way to play Facebook with regulation out of Washington looming over Silicon Valley?

It’s pretty difficult to see the latest development in the proposed acquisition by Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) of NXP Semiconductors N.V. Top 10 Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now: Biogen Idec Inc(BIIB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By George Budwell]

Biotech heavyweight Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB) has now lost over 13% of its value so far this year. To be fair, this year hasn’t been kind to biotechs in general, thanks to President Trump’s aggressive trade policies with China. But Biogen’s value has been declining at a far faster rate than the industry as a whole due to stiffer competition in the all-important multiple sclerosis (MS) space.

  • [By Cory Renauer]

Biogen Inc. (NASDAQ:BIIB) and Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) were two of biotech’s best-performing stocks in years past, but investors are a lot more worried about where they’re going right now. Gilead Sciences has a new management team and a new focus on treating cancer. Now that competitors have diminished Biogen’s dominance in the multiple sclerosis space, the company’s taking bold steps as well.

    Data source: Alkermes.

What happened with Alkermes this quarter?
Sales of opioid and alcohol-dependence drug Vivitrol increased 11% year over year as states including Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, and Kentucky increase coverage of the drug as a treatment option for patients suffering from substance-use disorder. Schizophrenia drug Aristada saw sales increase 72% year over year and 35% quarter over quarter, thanks to the launch of Aristada Initio, which helps patients get started on the drug while hospitalized. Alkermes estimates it captured 29% of new prescriptions for long-acting aripiprazole, the active ingredient in Aristada. Ampyra, which goes by Fampyra outside the U.S., brought in $38.8 million, basically flat year over year, which wasn’t bad since a generic launched in the U.S. last year. Manufacturing and royalty revenues for Risperdal Consta, Invega Sustenna, and Invega Trinza were up about 4% year over year. Fourth-quarter revenue also included a one-time payment of $26.7 million, which came from the sale of certain royalty streams by Zealand Pharma to Royalty Pharma. In November, Alkermes reported positive data from a second phase-3 clinical trial for schizophrenia drug ALKS 3831 that showed patients taking the drug had lower weight gain than those taking olanzapine. In December, Alkermes and its partner Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB) filed for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of diroximel fumarate, which Biogen plans to market under the name Vumerity. In January, Alkermes got bad news from the FDA when the agency turned down the marketing application for its depression drug ALKS 5461.
