Top Bank Stocks To Buy For 2019: Wells Fargo & Company(WFC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Hill]

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) took just a smidge of a haircut after releasing its first-quarter report, despite putting up huge ad revenue growth. What gives? 3M (NYSE:MMM) followed a knockout 2017 with a not-so-great start to the new year, but long-term investors shouldn’t sweat it too hard. Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) held its annual meeting today, and despite its CEO’s stated devotion to rebuilding customer trust, things don’t look so great for the bank — and could look even worse in a few weeks after Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) annual meeting. Tune in to find out more.

In Tuesday’s Kass Insider I remarked that there are a number of factors contributing to my cautious near-term market view:

Narrow Market Leadership. We’re back to a market that’s basically led by the FAANGs — Facebook (FB) , Amazon (AMZN) , Apple (AAPL) , Netflix (NFLX) and Google/Alphabet (GOOG) , (GOOGL) . Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Alphabet are holdings in Jim Cramer’s Action Alerts PLUS. Rising Short-Term Interest Rates. The 2-year U.S. note yield is up about 1.3 basis points at 2.39%. Complacency. I’m seeing more investor complacency — anecdotally, in the business media and elsewhere — ever since market’s main indices rallied off of their recent lows. Gold. The rise in gold looks solid. I’m currently long the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) . Lackluster Banks. We’re seeing disappointing action in the financials. However, I continue to buy them. I’m long Bank of America (BAC) , Citigroup (C) , JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC) , although I’m shorting Goldman Sachs (GS) .

It must be said, however, that some banks will not enjoy these tailwinds. There are some that can’t seem to get out of their own way in doing business. One such bank is Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC).

  • [By Jordan Wathen]

Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) customers who live in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio will soon see a new logo on their monthly statements. The bank decided to cut and run from retail branch banking in these three states in an effort to cull lower-performing branches from its network.

The US financial sector has been on a solid run of late. Over the last 12 months the S&P 500 Financials Sector has returned 18.9% relative to the S&P 500 Index of 17.9%. Many analysts have formed the view that with the potential for higher market interest rates, this sector has a long runway ahead. So with this in mind I thought that it would be a good time to update my estimates of the intrinsic value of the 3 major diversified banks. Over a series of 4 articles I will value JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM), Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC). In this first article I will set the scene by reviewing the performance of the 3 banks over the last 10 years and compare their current performance to the Sector.

Hot Low Price Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Third-party merchants already account for more than half of sales on Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) marketplace. Now it seems the company wants to tip the scales a bit further.

The online retail giant suddenly stopped making orders with many of its wholesale vendors, according to a report from Bloomberg. Instead, Amazon is encouraging those vendors to use its third-party merchant services to sell inventory directly to consumers. The move could reduce overhead, open more space in its warehouses and fulfillment centers for more profitable products and services, and increase overall profits for Amazon’s core retail business.

The real value of Amazon

Amazon has built a business that revolves around scale, and now it’s cashing in.

It built its core retail operations around broad selection and low prices and it sacrificed profits for years in order to expand its market share. Amazon’s share of online sales continues to grow, and eMarketer expects it to take more than half of all online sales in the United States this year.

Still, some individual companies had bad news that kept them out of the rally. ADT (NYSE:ADT), Mistras Group (NYSE:MG), and Valhi (NYSE:VHI) were among the worst performers. Here’s why they did so poorly.
