Top 10 Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now

President Donald Trump’s trade policy has Thailand worried.

Trade and geopolitics are the key risks for Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, Bank of Thailand Senior Director Don Nakornthab said in an interview Tuesday in Bangkok. Exports of goods and services account for about 70 percent of Thai gross domestic product.

“Trade politics is the most important risk for our economy as it can evolve into trade war,” Don said. "If there’s an external shock in the near future, our economy may face a difficult time.”

Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports roiled markets as investors weighed the possibility of escalating trade confrontations. Thailand could face greater U.S. scrutiny after its trade surplus with the world’s biggest economy exceeded $20 billion last year.

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Williams Partners L.P.(WPZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Natural gas pipeline giant Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB) and its MLP Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) reported mixed second-quarter results after the close Wednesday. Earnings declined fractionally due to asset sales and some higher costs. Cash flow, on the other hand, moved slightly higher thanks in part to lower interest expenses as a result of  debt reduction. However, while both numbers underwhelmed in Q2, they should head much higher in the coming year because Williams has several expansion projects under way that should boost its bottom line.

Matt DiLallo (Williams Companies): This natural gas pipeline giant has had a slow start in 2018. Through the first half of the year, cash flow at the company’s MLP Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) has only increased by about 2%, due mainly to recent asset sales. However, with a major expansion project coming on line, cash flow growth should accelerate in the second half of the year. That project and others in the pipeline have the company on track to grow cash flow 9% in 2018 and another 13% next year.

In addition to those pipelines already under construction, companies continue to pitch new projects to shippers in hopes of locking in the next wave of growth. The latest entry into this building boom is the proposed Permian Gulf Coast pipeline, which is a joint venture between Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP), Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), MPLX (NYSE:MPLX), and Delek US Holdings (NYSE:DK). The line could be in service as soon as mid-2020 if everything goes according to plan.

That’s why those who like dividends will undoubtedly love what Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD), Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), and MPLX (NYSE:MPLX) have to offer. Not only does this trio of energy midstream master limited partnerships (MLPs) pay well-above-average dividends that currently have yields of between 5.6% and 7.2%, but they have consistently increased their payment rate each quarter. With those payouts on rock-solid ground and more growth in the forecast, this trio of MLPs is perfect for dividend fans.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

This process starts with gathering pipelines, which transports a well’s production to central processing locations that separate oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs), and water. The oil then moves by truck, pipeline, or tanker to storage facilities while it waits to go through a refinery or petrochemical complex and get turned into fuel, chemicals, or another oil-based product. While oil companies tend to own some of these midstream assets, especially gathering lines and processing facilities, third parties hold a significant portion of the energy infrastructure in North America. These companies often charge fees for the logistical services provided to oil companies. Master limited partnerships (MLPs) are a noteworthy owner of these assets in the U.S. and most commonly found in the energy midstream sector. MLPs are tax-advantaged entities that pass through most of their income to investors. The largest MLP by enterprise value is Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD), while other notable ones include Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) and MPLX (NYSE:MPLX).

Top 10 Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Apache Corporation(APA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By VantagePoint]

Apache Corporation (NYSE: APA) has been ripping since March 2nd, when it hit a two-year low of $33.60. Since then it's up 25 percent.

The three-month chart below shows that this trend is likely to continue. The blue line is generated via VantagePoint's intermarket analysis, and represents a prediction of what APA's moving average will be in three days. The black line is a simple 10-day moving average. Note the bullish crossover that occurred in early March. That was a signal that the stock was entering an uptrend.

They presently have a $49.00 price target on the energy company’s stock. Stifel Nicolaus’ target price suggests a potential upside of 11.80% from the company’s current price.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The IEA’s forecast bodes well for oil stocks, especially those that have underperformed during the rally over the past year. Two that stand out are Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) and Apache (NYSE:APA), since both have lost value even though oil has been red-hot. Because of that, they trade at dirt cheap valuations versus their peers. That underperformance doesn’t make sense given the growth these companies can deliver at much lower oil prices.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Oil prices have continued rebounding this year, with the U.S. benchmark price WTI up another 7% to around $65 per barrel. That improving oil price has helped drive up most oil stocks. I say most because Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Apache (NYSE:APA), and Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) are flat to down so far this year because investors seem to have overlooked them entirely. Because of that, they trade for a dirt-cheap valuation versus their peers, making them intriguing options to consider.

  • [By ]

Now, I haven’t dabbled in U.S. shale oil or in the permian basin since I extracted myself from Apache (APA) several months ago after an epic fight in the name of capital preservation. But The Wall Street Journal ran a piece last week explaining that due to already-mentioned distribution bottlenecks, Permian-basin oil prices had fallen below $60 a barrel despite the fact that WTI futures were trading above $70.

Top Oil Stocks To Own For 2019: Transocean Inc.(RIG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Bromels]

Unless it’s not. Which it may not be. There’s a big cloud of uncertainty hanging over the company, in part thanks to its status as a very small fish in a very big deepwater ocean that’s full of huge, hungry competitors like Transocean (NYSE:RIG) and Ensco (NYSE:ESV). Questions also abound about its parent company, Seadrill (NYSE:SDRL).

  • [By Ethan Ryder]

An issue of Transocean LTD (NYSE:RIG) debt fell 1% against its face value during trading on Monday. The high-yield debt issue has a 6.8% coupon and will mature on March 15, 2038. The bonds in the issue are now trading at $85.50 and were trading at $86.31 last week. Price changes in a company’s debt in credit markets often anticipate parallel changes in its share price.

  • [By Jason Hall, Tyler Crowe, and John Bromels]

According to three Motley Fool contributors, there are still ample opportunities to profit in the oil and gas segment as some left-behind subsectors start to catch up to the higher price trend. Three in particular that are well-positioned going forward are Transocean LTD (NYSE:RIG), National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NYSE:NOV), and Devon Energy Corp (NYSE:DVN).

This was one of those quarters where Transocean’s (NYSE:RIG) results aren’t necessarily reflective of the company’s accomplishments. Even though Transocean posted yet another quarterly loss, the company completed a major acquisition and netted some notable contract wins. These won’t show up on the financial statements for a while, but they are indicative of a company poised to do better in the future.

When we asked three Motley Fool contributors to identify a stock they believe is absurdly cheap right now given its prospects, they picked Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (NYSE:BIP), Transocean (NYSE:RIG), and Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC). Here’s why.

Top Oil Stocks To Own For 2019: Marathon Oil Corporation(MRO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

The company’s Powder River Basin assets also generated strong drilling results, with several wells topping 1,000 BOE/D. Finally, while the company did drill four wells in the Bakken, it has deferred completing them until later this year. That program is one to keep an eye on given the results Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) delivered last quarter, when it completed record-setting wells in the Three Forks and Middle Bakken formations.

Thursday was a volatile day on Wall Street, as major stock indexes lost a lot of ground early in the day but then rebounded to finished mixed. Gains for the Nasdaq Composite came even as Dow Jones Industrial Average fell modestly, and although investors spent much of the session trying to parse through the implications of the latest economic report on retail sales, earnings played a key role in moving many well-known stocks. Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO), AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN), and Bloomin’ Brands (NASDAQ:BLMN) were among the top performers. Here’s why they did so well.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That efficiency was evident in the first quarter when companies like Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) drilled record-breaking wells. In Devon Energy’s case, it completed two of the highest-rate wells ever drilled in the nearly 100-year history of the Delaware Basin. Those wells, when combined with some prolific ones in the STACK shale play, enabled Devon to produce a huge profit in the first quarter. Marathon Oil, meanwhile, drilled record-setting wells in two formations of the Bakken region as well as several high-rate ones in the STACK, which fueled strong profits for the driller in the first quarter.

Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) delivered strong operational and financial results through the third quarter of last year, which had the company on track to end 2018 on a high note. Investors will find out whether that’s the case when the company reports its fourth-quarter results. That’s one of several things they should keep their eye on when reviewing that report.

Kinder Morgan, Inc. (NYSE:KMI) is one of the largest midstream companies in North America, and it has major dividend plans between 2018 and 2020. By the end of that period, it expects to increase its dividend from $0.50 per share per year (in 2017) to $1.25. That’s huge dividend growth in a short period of time. But don’t get too enamored by that news; the dividend will still be lower than it was before the midstream oil and gas company’s 75% dividend cut in 2016. If you’re looking for dividend income in the midstream space, take a look at longtime dividend payers ONEOK, Inc. (NYSE:OKE) and Magellan Midstream Partners, L.P. (NYSE:MMP) instead.

Crude prices recovered sharply from the profit-taking that we saw ahead of yesterday’s news events, and it is in the Saudis’ best interest to maintain higher market prices as long as the Saudi Aramco deal remains in the future. That said, the U.S. dollar continues to strengthen versus the greenback’s peers, and that could act as a weight upon all commodity prices if that condition were to persist.

Trade Idea: Magellan Midstream Partners (MMP)

You’ve heard all about the bottlenecks in domestic distribution. Now, you’ve heard Secretary Mnuchin talk about production. Still, we have to get this stuff to market. When it comes to energy, I have focused on oil services, hence my well-known long positions in both Action Alerts PLUS holding Schlumberger (SLB) , and Halliburton (HAL) .

Top Oil Stocks To Own For 2019: Williams Partners L.P.(WPZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

There’s an interesting dichotomy here, however. Crestwood was looking to stay financially disciplined, but it also needed to invest to grow. Doing both at the same time is difficult, which is why it partnered up with Con Ed in the Marcellus region, Shell Midstream Partners LP (NYSE:SHLX) and First Reserve in the Delaware Basin, and Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) in the Powder River basin. These agreements allow Crestwood to keep expanding its business without having to foot the entire bill for the investments.

Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB) was off to a great start in 2018 thanks to the growth of its majority-owned master limited partnership, Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ). There’s plenty more where that came from, which was clear from the comments of CEO Alan Armstrong on the accompanying quarterly conference call. While he didn’t fill in every detail about what lies ahead, he made sure investors knew that the company’s future looks bright.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Williams Companies is in the midst of a major transition. It recently agreed to acquire the rest of its MLP, Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ), in a $10.4 billion deal. The pipeline giant is making this acquisition so that it can more easily finance the expansion projects Williams Partners has under development. The transaction would allow it to free up some cash flow and improve its credit metrics, giving it more financial flexibility.

  • [By Tyler Crowe, Jason Hall, and Matthew DiLallo]

Matt DiLallo (Williams Companies): This natural gas pipeline giant has had a slow start in 2018. Through the first half of the year, cash flow at the company’s MLP Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) has only increased by about 2%, due mainly to recent asset sales. However, with a major expansion project coming on line, cash flow growth should accelerate in the second half of the year. That project and others in the pipeline have the company on track to grow cash flow 9% in 2018 and another 13% next year.
